DVT is a condition in which a blood clot, or thrombus, forms in one of the deep veins of the body, usually in the legs. The clot can partially or completely block blood flow, causing swelling, pain, and redness in the affected area. In some cases, a DVT can break loose and travel through the bloodstream to the lungs, causing a potentially life-threatening condition called pulmonary embolism.
